Debt payoff planner

Use only your own figures: each debt's balance, interest rate and minimum payment, and what you can pay in total each month. The planner works out two payoff orders month by month.

Runs only on what you enter. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Your details

Your own figure. It must at least cover the minimum payments.

Two ways to order the same payments

Both pay every minimum each month and put the rest of your budget on one debt at a time. Only the order differs. This is arithmetic on your figures, not advice.

General information, not financial or legal advice. KayaClear gives general information and estimates based on the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, the National Credit Regulations, the Prescription Act 68 of 1969 and the figures you enter. It is not financial advice as defined in the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS), and not legal advice. KayaClear is not a credit provider, not a registered debt counsellor and not an authorised financial services provider, and does not recommend any lender, credit product, debt counsellor or debt solution. It is not connected to the National Credit Regulator (NCR) or the National Consumer Tribunal. Your credit agreement, statements and certificate of balance show the actual amounts. For complaints about credit, contact the NCR; for help with over-indebtedness, a debt counsellor registered with the NCR. The planner uses only the figures you enter. It is arithmetic, not advice, and does not consider your income, other expenses, fees, rate changes or debt review.

How the planner works

Each month, interest is added to each balance at its yearly rate divided by twelve. Every minimum is paid, and whatever is left of your budget goes to one debt: the smallest balance (snowball) or the highest rate (avalanche). When a debt is cleared, its payment rolls on to the next one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the debt snowball method?

You pay the minimum on every debt and put any extra money on the debt with the smallest balance. When it is paid off, its payment moves to the next smallest.

What is the debt avalanche method?

You pay the minimum on every debt and put any extra money on the debt with the highest interest rate, then the next highest.

Which one should I use?

We do not recommend either. With the same budget, ordering by interest rate usually costs less interest; ordering by balance clears individual accounts sooner. The planner shows both with your figures so you can see the difference.

What if I cannot pay the minimums?

The planner tells you if your budget is below the total of the minimum payments. You can speak to your credit providers, or ask a debt counsellor registered with the National Credit Regulator about debt review.
